It's great to want to bring home a furry friend from a shelter, but once they get home it might be surprising to see all it takes to love and care for a pet. On Thursday, lawmakers in Australia's Capital Territory passed a law recognizing animals as sentient beings. As part of this legislation, CNN reports that dog owners must now walk their canines at least once a day; if they don't, they could be fined up to $2,700. "Modern animal welfare is about considering how an animal is coping both mentally and physically with the conditions in which it lives," a key legislator said in a press release.
