It's a Blast! "Atomik" Vodka Made From Chernobyl-Grown Ingredients

Down the hatch! Grain from the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear plant is now being used to create vodka. Scientists from the University of Portsmouth and the Ukraine brewed the spirit as part of a research project into whether radioactivity can be transferred to crops that are grown inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. While they found that there was some radioactivity in the grain itself, they say distillation has made the vodka--called "Atomik"--radiation-free. The newly formed Chernobyl Spirit company will start production this year, giving about 75 perent of its proceeds to local communities affected by the disaster. The 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant killed roughly 200,000 people when a reactor exploded and exposed millions of people to dangerously high levels of radiation.
