March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the achievements, leadership, and impact of women across industries and communities. Throughout the month, DelaWHERE To Go is highlighting women-owned businesses across Delaware that are shaping the culture of our state.
This month, we’re spotlighting kaffé KARMA, a Wilmington café that has become much more than just a place to grab coffee. Behind the café is founder Katie, whose vision for kaffé KARMA was never simply about opening just a coffee shop. Instead, it was about creating a space where people could gather, connect, and take care of themselves, both mentally and physically.
Today, kaffé KARMA has grown into one of Delaware’s most unique community-driven spaces, blending coffee, wellness, and connection in a way that feels refreshingly intentional. But the journey to get here started long before the first cup of coffee was served.
A Vision That Started Long Before the kaffé
Before opening kaffé KARMA, Katie was already deeply rooted in the wellness world. She worked as a full-time nutritionist and yoga instructor, running a coaching business called Functional Nutrition Fitness. Through both online and in-person coaching, she helped people develop healthier relationships with food, mindset, and movement. Her business grew quickly, eventually building a client database of nearly 1,000 people, with additional coaches working under her guidance. But despite her success, Katie noticed something missing in her everyday routine. Because she worked remotely, she often found herself working from cafés throughout the day. While she loved the experience of coffee shops, she remembers bringing her own meals or snacks with her.
“Most places only had bagels or pastries available,” she explained. “And while I love those things too, I’m definitely a foodie, I felt like there should be a space where you could grab healthier options in that fast-casual breakfast environment.”
At the same time, she noticed something else about Delaware. While there were plenty of social activities like book clubs, brewery events, and local gatherings, there wasn’t really a hub dedicated to wellness and connection.
“There are a lot of pockets of community here,” Katie said. “But there wasn’t a place where you could walk in and feel connected to things like yoga studios, run clubs, fitness communities, and wellness spaces all in one place.” That idea stayed with her for years, even landing on her 10-year vision plan to one day open a wellness café. What she didn’t know at the time was how quickly that vision would eventually become reality.

More Than a Coffee Shop
Walking into kaffé KARMA feels different from many traditional cafés. Instead of quiet corners filled with people working alone, the atmosphere is energetic and welcoming. Music plays in the background, conversations fill the space, and the environment feels intentionally designed to bring people together.
For Katie, that energy is exactly the point. “I want people to walk in and feel like this is a place where connection happens,” she said. While coffee and food are part of the experience, the true goal of kaffé KARMA goes far beyond what’s on the menu. The café was built around the concept of a “third place.”
A third place is somewhere that exists outside of home and work, a space where people can gather, recharge, and feel part of their community. “People need somewhere that isn’t their house and isn’t their job,” Katie explained. “A place where they can just exist, connect with others, and feel good being there.” kaffé KARMA was designed to be exactly that.
A Wall That Tells the Story of kaffé KARMA
One of the most meaningful details inside kaffé KARMA isn’t on the menu, it’s on the wall. If you look closely around the café, you’ll notice framed photos and sketches that tell the story of how the business came to life. Many of them were pulled directly from Katie’s personal journals during the early planning stages of kaffé KARMA. During the uncertainty of 2020, when much of the world felt paused, Katie spent countless hours journaling, sketching ideas, and visualizing what the space could eventually become. Those early notes and drawings didn’t stay hidden in a notebook. They became part of the café itself.
Today, that wall serves as a visual timeline of kaffé KARMA journey, showing how a simple idea written down during a challenging time eventually turned into a thriving community space. For visitors, it’s a reminder that every successful business starts somewhere, often with nothing more than a vision and the courage to pursue it.

Creating Accessible Wellness Through the Spread Good Karma Foundation
One of the most impactful aspects of kaffé KARMA is something many visitors may not realize right away: the Spread Good Karma Foundation. When the café first opened, the space operated as a coffee shop during the day and a yoga studio in the evenings. However, Katie quickly realized that charging for classes wasn’t fully aligned with her vision for accessibility. She wanted wellness to be available to anyone who needed it. That idea led to the creation of the nonprofit foundation, which now offers a wide range of free and donation-based wellness programming.
Today, the foundation hosts events and activities including:
- Yoga and meditation classes
- Community walk clubs
- Run clubs
- Wellness workshops
- Seasonal farmers markets connecting visitors with local farms and producers
The goal is to encourage what Katie calls preventative wellness.
“We have people in their 70s showing up for walk club, parents bringing their kids, people trying yoga for the very first time,” she said. “Watching that happen has been one of the coolest things ever.”“In Delaware, we talk a lot about going to the doctor and getting screenings, which are important,” she said. “But we don’t talk enough about what people can do every day to take care of themselves.” By making these programs accessible and welcoming, kaffé Karma has become a place where people can explore wellness without pressure or intimidation. And the impact has been powerful.

Take the kaffé KARMA Community With You
kaffé KARMA's sense of community doesn’t stop at the café doors. Visitors can also take part in the culture of the space through kaffé KARMA merchandise, which reflects the café’s wellness-focused mission and community programs. Inside the café, guests can find a selection of apparel including hoodies, crewnecks, hats, and other items featuring messages like “Spread Good Karma” and “Good Karma Walk Club.” Many of these pieces connect directly to the café’s wellness initiatives and community events.
For those who participate in kaffé KARMA's popular walk clubs and wellness programs, the merch has become a fun way for people to represent the community they’re part of. From minimalist crewnecks that promote the café’s “Spread Good Karma” message to cozy hoodies designed for walk club mornings, the collection reflects the same thoughtful branding and intentional lifestyle that kaffé KARMA has built its space around.
It’s another way the café continues to grow beyond coffee, creating a community people feel proud to be part of.

The Reality of Being a Woman-Owned Business
As a woman-owned business, Katie has also experienced firsthand some of the assumptions that still exist in entrepreneurship. She shared that when people visit the café with her husband, many automatically assume he is the one running the business.
“He always laughs and tells them, ‘That’s all hers,’” she said. Even in 2026, moments like that still happen. But Katie embraces her leadership with confidence. “I love business. I love growing this thing,” she said. “Sometimes I feel like a shark, and I’m proud of that.” Her approach challenges the traditional image many people expect from a woman-owned café. Instead of pastel aesthetics or predictable branding, kaffé KARMA, reflects Katie’s personality... modern, bold, and unapologetically ambitious!
What I Tried at kaffé KARMA: The Drinks
During my visit to kaffé KARMA, I had the chance to try a few items from the menu that perfectly capture the café’s focus on balance, wellness, and flavor. To start, I ordered a detox juice, which felt like the perfect refreshing option alongside a blue matcha and a classic cappuccino. kaffé KARMA, offers a variety of drinks that range from energizing coffee staples to wellness-focused beverages, making it easy to find something that fits your mood.

What I Tried at kaffé KARMA: The Meals
Another thing that sets kaffé KARMA apart is its focus on balanced, nourishing meals. Drawing from founder Katie’s background in nutrition, the menu offers options that feel both wholesome and satisfying. From overnight oat bowls topped with fresh fruit and seeds to savory gourmet toasts, sandwiches, and wellness-forward drinks, the café makes it easy to grab something that fuels your day without sacrificing flavor. It’s a reflection of the philosophy behind kaffé KARMA, that healthy food can still feel comforting, indulgent, and accessible.

I have to start off with my personal favorite, the Nourishing Oatmeal Bowl, made with overnight oats, rolled oats, almond milk, blueberries, bananas, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, cashew butter, cinnamon, and a drizzle of honey. It’s the kind of breakfast that feels both comforting and energizing.

I also ordered one of their signature gourmet toasts, the “KARMA” toast, which features hummus, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, olives, olive oil, and parsley a savory option that feels light but flavorful.

To round out the meal, I tried one of their sandwiches and their well-known loaded sammie, served on your choice of bagel or sourdough with fried egg, cheddar cheese, protein, microgreens, avocado, red onion, tomato, a light smear of cream cheese, and a drizzle of hot honey.
Each item reflected the same idea that runs through everything at kaffé KARMA: food that feels indulgent and satisfying while still supporting a balanced lifestyle.

A Space Built on Purpose
At its core, kaffé KARMA represents something bigger than a café. It’s a place built on the idea that people deserve spaces where they can slow down, reconnect, and feel supported. For Katie, that mission has always been clear. “I want people to walk in for a cup of coffee and leave feeling better than when they arrived,” she said. And as kaffé KARMA continues to grow, that simple idea is shaping a community that extends far beyond the café itself.
