Kacey Musgraves performed a beautiful tribute to one of country music’s truest trailblazers at the 65th Grammy Awards on Sunday evening (February 5). Musgraves, a six-time Grammy Award winner, honored the legendary Loretta Lynn with her rendition of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” playing Lynn’s guitar on stage as the crowd remembered Lynn and other icons in the genre who died last year (including Naomi Judd — one-half of the iconic mother-daughter duo The Judds with daughter Wynonna JuddOlivia Newton-John, Mickey Gilley and other beloved artists and professionals in the country music industry).

“Ten year old me singing Loretta’s songs would have never dreamed I’d be putting my hands right where she made magic for decades,” Musgraves wrote in a heartfelt statement as she shared a photo of herself playing Lynn’s guitar on her Instagram story on Sunday night. “Thank you to the family of [Loretta Lynn] for trusting me with her guitar and this moment of honor tonight. I wouldn’t have the courage or place I have as a songwriter without her.”

Lynn’s family previously announced that she’d “passed away peacefully…in her sleep at home at her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills, [Tennessee],” the morning of October 4. She was 90. “Coal Miner’s Daughter” was one of Lynn’s most memorable classics throughout her decades-long career. The Butcher Holler-Kentucky born artists’s first-ever No. 1 single was “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl,” and she went on to release “The Pill,” “”Don’t Come Home A- Drinkin,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “Fist City,” “Still Woman Enough” and many more hit songs over the years.

“The [Recording Academy/GRAMMYs] were so special to Loretta,” reads a tweet on Lynn’s Twitter account on Saturday (February 4). She was nominated or won an award every decade (multiple times) for 6 decades in a row! Amazing. The show’s tribute to her by [Kacey Musgraves] ill be especially touching as Kacey will be playing Loretta’s very own Epiphone guitar. We are touched that her guitar will be on that stage tomorrow night. Thank you Grammys, thank you Kacey!”

Musgraves’ tribute was part of a powerful in memoriam performance that also included Maverick City Music and Quavo performing in memory of Takeoff, and Sheryl CrowMick Fleetwood and Bonnie Raitt, joining to remember Christine McVie.

“Thank you, [Kacey Musgraves], for this beautiful tribute,” Lynn’s family wrote in a tweet from the legendary artist’s Twitter account on Sunday night, following Musgraves' performance. “The love all of you have shown us for our mom is beyond words.”
